Katie Yuen is a senior photography major at Tyler School of
Art.
She has been photographing since she was twelve years old, but did not
start seriously photographing until her sophomore year of college. She loved to
paint but wanted to make images without the mess and time that came with making
paintings, and with that, her love for photography blossomed. Her biggest
inspirations are commercial photographers. She admires the photographer-client
relationship they have and she wanted to create similar beautiful imagery,
capture important moments in other people’s lives, and grow her own business
just like them.
Katie’s work can be described as quiet, sentimental, and
personal. She most enjoys photographing the body because it is a timeless
subject and something everyone can relate to. “There are endless opportunities
for uniqueness and quirks that are beautiful because they are what make us
human.” She has also lately been interested in people and their belongings in
their own personal spaces – how they choose to display things, what they choose
to display, their choices in books and objects and how those things help define
their personality. Katie is just a people person and loves learning about each
individual she encounters. In her free time, Katie runs her own photography
business, shooting weddings and portraits.
In a world where Katie can be anything she wants, she would
love to create work that is big, beautiful, and extensive, not constrained by
any budget or space. She would also love to teach – to share her knowledge with
others and inspire people and help them find something they want to create.
“Whether it’s on a small scale or large scale, I think I’m
meant to work with people in some capacity larger than showing my work in
galleries or working for individual clients forever.”
